Talking About Tummy Bugs

We’ve all had contagious tummy bugs and know how quickly they can spread through the whole family.  It’s one of those things we share but no one wants. Tummy bugs are extremely unpleasant for adults and even worse for our little ones and it’s heartbreaking to see them that sick. It can also be disruptive to a family unit when one or more members comes down with this type illness.

Gastroenteritis can present with varying symptoms that include nausea, stomach cramps, fever, headache and muscle aches. It takes about 1 – 3 days to develop symptoms and the illness may last a day or two.  Viral gastroenteritis disrupts normal activities, and can be serious in the very young or the very old, sometimes causing dehydration.

This infectious illness is so easily caught if you come in contact with someone who already has the bug.  It can be spread by touch and through the air.  When a person vomits, large amounts of virus particles pass into the air as an invisible mist and can infect other people in the same room. It’s totally gross to read about it, but knowing these facts will help you prevent spreading it further.

It’s so important to encourage everyone in your home to vigilantly wash their hands and dispose of any tissues etc being used. Any hard objects like kitchen benchtops, kids toys, door handles etc should be kept clean with disinfectant too to avoid spreading and reinfecting.  And to avoid becoming dehydrated regularly take small sips of water.  Even if you feel like a big drink try to just sip to avoid it coming straight back up again.

If your little one comes down with this horrible bug they need to stay home to rest and get better.  Because gastro is infectious for a period after the symptoms cease you’ll need to keep them at home for an extra day or two not only to help prevent infecting other children and staff, but also to let their little bodies completely get over the bug.  If they haven’t improved after a day or so it’s best to get them to your GP or alternative health care professional to avoid complications such as dehydration.
